Simplicity Beats Complexity, Hands Down, Every Time

There’s no such thing as a complicated business, only businesses run in complicated ways!

Having worked with hundreds of different businesses in nine different countries on both sides of the globe, I can tell you I have never come across a complicated business.
I have, however, come across businesses, far too many of them, run in the most complicated ways. It doesn’t have to be like that.

What every business owner and executive needs to realise is that complexity is their enemy. Anyone can make something complicated. The real trick is in making it simple because with simplicity comes real power.

In this article, I’m going to talk about some simple, yet very powerful, rules for eliminating complexity from any business of any size.

Complexity is your enemy. Any fool can make something complicated. The real skill is in making things simple. – Richard Branson

People like Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, all great entrepreneurs, realise that simplicity beats complexity, hands down.

One of the basic laws of thermodynamics is entropy. It says that every system decays towards disorder unless you apply energy from the outside. This isn’t just true in the universe; it’s true in our businesses.
Entropy in business.
This is where we come to the power of simplicity. To eliminate disorder, we systemize.

To eliminate complexity, we simplify. System plus simplicity equals power, real power!

Systemisation plus simplicity brings real power to a business.

Business Processes

One of the most effective ways to systemize and simplify your business is to build processes. Below is an example of a process which shows how a business accepts customer orders.
Processes bring system plus simplicity

A Business Processes brings System + Simplicity = Power

Processes Are More Than Diagrams

Processes give you a standard way of doing things and the simplest way of doing things. They define the right time and way to start and stop. They give you a means to eliminate errors. They give you a means to tune what’s done. They give you a means to measure performance.

Processes also provide an easy means of training staff so they are all doing the right thing, in the simplest way, at the right time, in the same way and, through your standards consistently delivering your promise to your customers. What can be better than that?

This is the power of simplicity. Remember, to eliminate disorder, we systemize. To eliminate complexity, we simplify. System plus simplicity equals power.
